A young Wick man has been remanded in custody following a disturbance in the street where he lives earlier this week.

Ross Baxter pleaded not guilty to five charges comprising two counts of assault, one of threatening or abusive behaviour, possession of an offensive weapon and failure to comply with a court order.

The offences are said to have occurred in Cairndhuna Terrace, Wick, on Tuesday, the town's sheriff court was told on Thursday.

The charges allege that Baxter (20) repeatedly punched Francis Watt on her head, repeatedly punched and kicked Pricilla Lucille Amanda Watt, shouted and swore on the way to Wick Police Station in a police vehicle and banged on the door of his cell there.

Baxter, who appeared from custody, is also accused of having been in possession of an offensive weapon.

The accused attempted to explain from the dock that he had a legitimate reason for having the hammer but was advised by Sheriff Andrew Berry to desist, as it would not be proper for him to hear that in advance of the trial.

The sheriff rejected a plea for bail by solicitor Fiona MacDonald following an objection by Fiscal David Barclay.

Baxter will stand trial on April 7.
