A driver who lost control of his car while negotiating a right-hand bend and collided with an oncoming vehicle escaped serious injury, Wick Sheriff Court was told on Wednesday.

Jack Buckland (26) was fined £300 by Sheriff Jo Platt who said that the consequences of the accused straying onto the wrong side of the road could have been more serious.

Emergency services converged on the accident scene on the A99, south of Keiss, on October 4, last year.

Buckland, of Harrow Terrace, Wick, was taken to Caithness General Hospital but was found not to have sustained any lasting injuries.

In addition to the fine, Buckland, who pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving, also incurred four penalty points.
