A Wick community councillor is keen to see a kerbside glass collection service for people who are unable to get to bottle banks such as those outside supermarkets.

Allan Bruce, vice-chairman of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council, said he had been asked by members of the public about glass recycling options.

“Glass recycling can be done at all major supermarkets and down at the riverside,” Mr Bruce said at the November meeting of the community council.

“But the question is asked about people who maybe don’t have a car, or have mobility issues – how do they recycle their glass when there’s no kerbside collection for glass?

“I’ve got a couple of ideas here that I’m maybe going to follow up on. There might be something that could be done.”

A Highland Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there are no plans to introduce kerbside glass recycling.”

Highland Council is altering its kerbside collections so that recyclable material is split into two wheelie bins, while waste for landfill will go into a new, smaller bin.

The new grey non-recyclable waste bin is being delivered to residents with a detailed information booklet explaining the changes and what to put in each bin. A new collection calendar is provided with the booklet.
