WICK looks set to benefit from a new tourist information service being set up by a local businesswoman which will fill a much-needed gap in the market for visitors to the town.

The last tourist information in Wick was provided through VisitScotland by McAllan's menswear shop in High Street, but that service ceased over a year ago in January 2018.

Morag Mackenzie, of Morag's Cafe, also in the town's High Street, said: "We had been sending people down to McAllan's for information for some time before I realised there was nobody doing anything in Wick and just felt that we should make an effort.

"We are needing a bit of TLC in this town and hopefully it will provide a welcome boost.

"It is something that was lacking in the town. With the NC500 we are supposed to be embracing everything. We should be showcasing our county.

"We get asked a lot for information as we are right in the middle of the street. Tourists have asked for help in finding places like Sinclair and Girnigoe Castle and Whaligoe Steps."

The café owner explained that she had approached VisitScotland but decided it was easier just to set up a tourist information stand independently.

"We are in the process of setting it up and should have it done by Easter," she said.

So far Morag has approached Pentland Ferries and is getting in touch with John O'Groats Ferries. She also has plans to put up posters for local events in the café, and bus timetables will be among the information available.

"It is just a start – we are just finding our way at the moment," she said. "We plan to have everything that people will hopefully need information on."

Morag said she would be delighted to hear from anybody involved in tourism within the county and happily display information on their behalf.
