Wick Academy have contributed more than £1700 to the Sophie’s Story fundraising appeal.

Players from the Highland League club volunteered to donate a week’s wages after hearing that little Sophie Mason has been diagnosed with Batten disease (CLN1), a rare and life-limiting degenerative genetic disorder.

The total from Academy includes £380 from a bucket collection at a recent home match against Forres Mechanics and £170 from the 50/50 draw when Clachnacuddin visited Harmsworth Park the previous midweek.

Sophie’s father is Keith Mason, a member of Clachnacuddin’s coaching staff.

Wick Academy manager Gary Manson said: “We were only too happy to help. The Highland League is a close community, so when you hear of a tragic story affecting someone within the league then people rally round to help.

“We were pleased we could do something that may give the family the opportunity to make some memories to cherish.”

Parents Keith and Lizzie set up Sophie’s Story on GoFundMe after their daughter was diagnosed with the disease in November, aged 17 months, and they have raised more than £21,000 so far. They say their main focus is to make Sophie’s life as fulfilled and comfortable as possible.
