MOTORISTS have been urged not to drive "unless absolutely necessary" following the start of amber and yellow weather warnings for snow in the Highlands.
Police Scotland officers in the region called on motorists to avoid roads if possible, amid concerns over the impact of potentially heavy snowfall on Highland routes.
"The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for snow across parts of Scotland," said a police spokesman. "Do not travel on the roads unless absolutely necessary."
They also advised those that do drive to exercise caution while travelling.
The Met Office warnings came into force earlier this afternoon.
The yellow warning covers most inland Highland areas, including parts of Caithness, Sutherland, Ross-shire, Inverness-shire, the Great Glen and parts of Badenoch and Strathspey.
The amber warning also covers areas in Badenoch and Strathspey, and extends south through the Central Belt, Southern Uplands, Cheviots and on into northern England's Pennines.
The amber warning will be in force until 10am tomorrow, with the yellow alert for snow and ice remaining active until 9pm tomorrow.
