WATCH: Wild boar gets bored and goes on the run in Caithness

A so-called ‘wild boar’ is on the loose in the Caithness countryside and appeared in the Bilbster area of the county today.

The roaming mammal was seen around Bower on Saturday before making his way to land on Bilbster Mains Farm where he was captured on video by local man David Anderson who posted the footage on Facebook.

The animal appeared quite docile and could be seen happily munching away on some food he had discovered. Wild boar have powerful neck muscles and a long snout allows the animals to plough through the ground in search of sustenance.

The video was published on Bilbster Mains’ Facebook page at MBM Farms Ltd with the headline: “Anyone missing a pig, has appeared on the farm.”

The post from around noon today added: “We have a wild boar appeared this morning if the owners are still looking for him.”

A more recent update states that the hungry pig had just been seen munching his way through compost bins at Watten Hall.

Wild boar are common on mainland Europe, with an estimated population of several million. If you encounter a wild boar, the best advice is to move away slowly in the opposite direction and keep dogs well away.
