North MP Jamie Stone today sought the backing of Health Secretary Matt Hancock to give "maximum encouragement" to the Scottish Government when it comes to the vaccine rollout.

With tourism and hospitality offering up 33,000 jobs in the far north, the pandemic has taken a particular toll on the local economy, says Mr Stone.

The Health Secretary agreed with Mr Stone that the vaccine rollout is “an absolutely crucial part of getting all of us on the road to recovery”. He also pledged to do everything in his power to ensure that businesses and residents across Scotland benefit from the protection the vaccine offers.

Following the exchange, Mr Stone commented: “There is light at the end of the tunnel. I urge everyone to accept the invitation to receive the Covid-19 vaccine once their turn comes. The economic recovery of the Highlands depends on it.

"I know I share with my fellow Highlanders a natural instinct to welcome the many visitors who travel the distance to experience the beauty of the place we call home, but the pandemic has put a stop to all that. It has been a disaster for the far north, a place which generates so much of its income from tourism and hospitality.

"We all have a part to play in our joint exit strategy. Personally, I am biting at the bit to get to my vaccine appointment later today, to receive my first dose and take my first step towards normal life.”

Covid jab was quick and painless, says Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP
