Wick John O'Groats Airport shared spectacular images and video footage on its Facebook page yesterday as specialist vehicles got into action to clear snow from the runway.

In the morning the runway was out of action due to heavy snowfall in the area and the airport closed.

At 8.49am the airport reported on its Facebook page: "Wick John O’Groats is snow closed for the time being, the snow blowers are being fired up as we speak and we hope to reopen by lunchtime."

Then at around 11am it said that the "snowblowers are working hard and we hope to reopen in the next hour".

As the clearance operation progressed, the airport talked of the "big task" ahead in removing 4cm of snow from the 1825m by 45m runway at Wick John O’Groats.

Slightly later another post reported: "Just two hours after we had to close, Wick John O’Groats is back open for business, having cleared an estimated 200 tonnes of snow from our runway."

Airport funding is welcomed but Wick John O'Groats is not saved
