TWO new weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office – amid concerns that rain and a partial thaw of lying snow could cause localised flooding.

An ice warning comes into force at 6pm on Saturday evening and will remain in place until 11am on Sunday.

And a rain warning for western parts of the Highlands will come into effect at 6pm on Sunday and run right through until 6pm on Monday.

The ice warning covers most of the Highlands, apart from western parts of Sutherland and Ross-shire, and Lochaber.

A Met Office forecaster said: "Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected this evening and overnight leading to a risk of icy stretches on untreated surfaces, especially where snow has been melting during the day.

"Further ice is possible across central Scotland as the skies clear later in the night."

Commenting on the later rain warning, they added: "Rain will become persistent and heavy at times during Sunday, continuing on Monday.

"Rainfall accumulations of 60 to 80mm are expected over high ground. In addition, there will be a thaw of lying snow adding to the flooding and travel difficulties.

"The rain will turn back to snow on high ground from the north later on Monday before clearing."

Saturday's ice warning comes after parts of the Highlands recorded their coldest night of the winter so far. Glenmore in the Cairngorms posted a low of -13.3C overnight into Saturday.
