ADVICE on how to obtain funding to repair and conserve local war memorials is to be passed on at an event next week.

Communities are being invited to a workshop by the War Memorials Trust, a charity working for the protection and conservation of war memorial heritage across the UK.

The session will provide guidance on how to carry out a basic assessment of the condition of a war memorial and how to identify what works may be necessary.

Guidance on the eligibility criteria the trust applies to applications for funding will also be available, as will advice on how to complete a grant pre-application form, including the submission of images of the memorial, which the trust will use to assess the suitability of any work proposed. There will also be information on how to obtain quotes.

Councillor Allan Henderson, chairman of the council’s community services committee, said: “The trust is providing grants of up to 75 per cent of the eligible costs for conservation and repair projects to memorials. There are still grants available from the Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund and I would urge anyone who wants to find out more about how to get funding to conserve their local war memorial to go along to the workshop.”

A session will be held in Caithness Horizons, Thurso, on Monday, October 5, from 7-9pm.
