A Thurso man seeks volunteers to help him weed an expansive rose bed he has been tending to on Olrig Street this Sunday (August 14).

Alexander Glasgow has transformed the centre of Thurso with rose beds and planters filled with colourful blooms but now asks if residents would be able to give him a hand maintaining the Olrig Street flower bed.

One of the flowers at Olrig Street is this Queen Elizabeth rose that was specially bred in 1954 by American rose fancier, Walter Lammerts in honour of Her Majesty ascending to the throne. 'This was the first plant I planted,' said Alexander Glasgow.

In a Facebook post, Mr Glasgow said: "The Olrig Street roses sit at nose-level so their aroma is caught every time you pass.

"The recent wet and warm weather has been good for farmers' hay. Unfortunately it also has been good for weeds which have erupted. Weeding them is like weeding the Forth Road Bridge. Carpet plants are being considered."

Mr Glasgow said volunteers should meet by the Olrig Street rose bed at 2pm on Sunday. Long-sleeved clothing and gloves are recommended and please bring your own hand tools and refreshments. Children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
