TWO Thurso medical practices are to hold "try it out" demonstrations on how to use new video technology to make hospital and GP video appointments.

NHS Highland’s Princes Street Surgery and Riverbank Practice are to hold sessions on Thursday to show members of the public how to use the NHS Near Me and GP Near Me services.

The sessions will also show how people can use their own video-calling devices (like a smartphone, tablet or computer with webcam) to attend hospital or GP practice appointments from the comfort of their own homes.

Princes Street Practice manager Christine Tait said: "The idea of the ‘try it out’ sessions on Thursday is for members of the public to find out more about how to use NHS Near Me and the soon-to-be-launched GP Near Me services.

"The easy-to-use NHS Near Me service is a video consultancy service which will allow patients to attend clinics using a device from our practice or from their own homes. Twenty-three NHS Highland departments now hold video consultant clinics and more services are being developed."

Riverbank Practice manager Catriona Naughton said: "The idea behind the NHS Near Me service is, in many instances, to allow patients to attend their appointments closer to home, so reducing the need to travel."

Both GP practices plan to launch the similar GP Near Me service in the near future, which will mean that the public will be able to make appointments with their local GPs using their own devices at home.

Appointments using the NHS Near Me service can be made with the following NHS Highland departments: Cardiology; Clinical Genetics; Colo-rectal; Cystic Fibrosis; Dermatology; Diabetes; Dietetics; Gastroenterology; Haematology; Infectious disease; Neurology; Obstetrics; Oncology; Paediatrics; Paediatric Physiotherapy; Psychiatry; Renal; Respiratory; Rheumatology; Sleep service; Speech & Language therapy; and Stroke & Rehabilitation. More services are currently being developed.
