Seal rescues are among the latest challenges facing the Caithness team of TV vets.

The Highland Vet, which began last Monday, shows how the staff of DS McGregor & Partners have to be ready to assist all kinds of animals.

Episode two of the 12-part series on 5Select finds Shondie Maclean treating a seal pup called Pudding while fellow vet David Mackay looks after Buster, who is very underweight.

It turns out to be the first time David has had to look after a seal and he is learning the ropes from Shondie.

David says: "It's funny to think the first thing I'm going to do tomorrow is to treat a seal – I didn't expect that at vet school.

“But he warns: "Don't let those puppy-dog eyes fool you – he is quite lively."

The series turns the spotlight on the dedicated team of vets, vet nurses and staff members from DS McGregor & Partners' mixed practices in Thurso and Wick, who were filmed hard at work during the winter and early spring.

Led by veterinary surgeon and practice director Guy Gordon, they cover an expanse of more than 1000 square miles, helping pets, farm animals and wildlife 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Highland Vet has already attracted a great new audience, and on Friday Scottish TV personality Lorraine Kelly confessed that she is a fan of the programme.

Speaking on her ITV show to Downton Abbey star Phyllis Logan, who narrates the series, Lorraine said: "I love The Highland Vet – it is such a lovely show. It's just what we need right now to pick us up."

During the appearance by Phyllis to promote the show, her husband – Hollywood star Kevin McNally – made an appearance in his dressing gown.

The arrival of the Pirates of the Caribbean actor caused a stir on the internet with everyone talking about The Highland Vet.

Viewers can find out what happens to the seals in The Highland Vet on Monday at 9pm on 5Select.
