A TOTAL of £500 has been handed over to the community café in Thurso to help it reopen following the easing of the coronavirus restrictions.

Cheques for £250 were given by the Thurso and Wick Trade Union Council (TWTUC) and Unite the union to the café which is situated near Thurso harbour. Caithness Foodbank also provided a large amount of food.

TWTUC chairman Davie Alexander said: "Organisations such as the café and food bank have proved to be a fantastic service to the community.

"The trade union council in conjunction with Unite were very happy to be able to provide support during these uncertain times."

Unite branch secretary John Deighan said: "The donations from the Caithness Foodbank and the unions will assist the café to reopen shortly. As well as running the café on a voluntary basis, a community fridge is located outside the building and is accessible 24/7."

The cheques were presented to community café volunteers at the weekend by Mr Alexander and Mr Deighan.

The café received the Caithness Foodbank donation at the same time.
