Two Caithness bus services are cut due to lack of demand

LOW passenger demand has resulted in the loss of two bus services in Caithness.

Stagecoach is axing a late-night service between Wick and Thurso and the Thurso town service after 2.30pm.

The company has come under fire for pulling the plug on the 11.21pm bus on Sundays for the effect it will have on people who have to work unsociable hours.

The reduction of the town service in Thurso would also have an impact on the public and workers wanting to get back home, according to Thurso community councillor Don Smith.

But a spokeswoman for Stagecoach North Scotland said: “For the last two years, the last journey from Wick to Thurso has been withdrawn through the winter along with the last X99 from Inverness to Wick.

“These journeys operate during summer only due to the low passenger demand on the entire journey.

“The 76 (Thurso town service) only operates until 2.30pm again due to low passenger demand.

“We understand that this may impact a small number of people and we are sorry for that.”
