Town centre market team keen to hear from food producers
THE organisers of Wick’s trial series of indoor markets say they would be keen to hear from local food producers interested in taking part.
The first market – held last Saturday in the foyer of Caithness House, the Highland Council building in Market Square – was declared a success with a steady flow of customers throughout the day. It is organised by the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council, with further markets taking place on the three remaining Saturdays in September.
John Bogle, the community council secretary, said: “It was very busy – in fact folk were still coming in at 3pm when the market was closing.
One point that was raised by several people was the low number of food-related stalls. This is something we agree with entirely.
“I asked the stall holders for feedback after the event and of those who have responded almost all thought it had been worthwhile and enjoyable, with a good buzz about the place. The town centre was also reported to be busier than usual, which is what we were aiming for, so I hope the local shops also benefited.
“One point that was raised by several people was the low number of food-related stalls. This is something we agree with entirely as it is food stalls that will attract local people back each week.
“If there are any local food producers out there who would be interested in exploring this further I would be delighted to hear from them.
“This Saturday we will have more home baking and sweet stalls plus some different craft stalls from last week, so hopefully there will be continued interest and support from local people.”
The market will run from 10am to 3pm and the stalls will include home baking, fresh and frozen berries, preserves, honey, sweets, chocolate products, wool, knitwear, hand-knitted toys, candles, soap, bath bombs, handmade wooden gifts, cards, arts and home décor, mixed media items, paintings and drawings, custom-printed gifts, books and upcycled stationery. The fish van will again be outside.
The initiative is part of the Wick town centre regeneration programme. Feedback will be put towards a feasibility study into the possible community use of the former Original Factory Shop in the town centre.
