Thurso’s Highland Hospice crowned favourite charity shop in Scotland
Highland Hospice’s charity shop in Thurso has taken the title of Scotland winner in the UK’s Favourite Charity Shop Awards, it was announced today (Monday, September 30).
The title was awarded as part of the first-ever search for the UK’s favourite charity shop by the Charity Retail Association (CRA).
The shop was one of 6500 that were nominated across the UK and claimed the winning spot in a public vote involving almost 13,000 people. Thurso is one of 15 shops which are spread throughout the Highlands raising income for Highland Hospice.
The local charity not only provides services directly to those in need, it also works in partnership with local communities and supports professional and unpaid carers by sharing resources and offering training and mentoring to provide the best care possible.
Susan Imlach, shop manager of the High Street premises, said: “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built here in Thurso.
“Our shop is more than just a place to shop – it’s a community hub. This award means the world to our team, volunteers, and customers who’ve supported us for years. It’s amazing to see the impact our shop has, not just in raising essential funds for Highland Hospice but in fostering a strong sense of community spirit.”
Susan Cooper, commerce manager at Highland Hospice, added: “Winning this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers who make our Thurso shop what it is.
“Every day, they ensure the shop not only raises vital funds for the Hospice, but also creates a welcoming space for the local community. We’re so grateful to everyone who voted and helped make this possible.”
Charity shops are an institution in the UK and have seen a rise in popularity in recent years as the public look for more ways to shop sustainably, support good causes and give back to their communities.
The awards are the first of their kind and were launched in June to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the CRA, the membership organisation for charity shops in the UK.
Robin Osterley, chief executive of the CRA, said: “Huge congratulations to Highland Hospice.
“This award is a testament to the dedication of the shop’s staff and volunteers and highlights what this wonderful store means to the local community. We have been overwhelmed by the public’s response to our search for the UK’s Favourite Charity Shop, which celebrates the contribution the sector makes to communities and good causes across the UK.”
