Thurso parking regime is subject to new consultation

Community councillors in Thurso have welcomed the latest move to review parking restrictions in the centre of the town.

The current regime is confusing for locals and visitors to the town, it was agreed at last Tuesday evening’s meeting.

Local Highland councillor Matthew Reiss urged the public to take part in a new consultation on the issue.

One proposal he believed that would prove popular was to extend the maximum parking time in the central part of Princes Street during the day from one to two hours.

He said the document going out to consultation was approved at the latest meeting of the council’s Caithness area committee.

“It’s an excellent piece of work,” said Councillor Reiss. “What we’re trying to do is to stop people parking all day in Princes Street.

“There’s no perfect answer – you’ll never get that – but the restrictions on Princes Street have been draconian.”

Council vice chair Billy Sinclair said the review is long overdue.

“Why can’t we keep it really simple and make it two hours everywhere?” he asked. “It’s crazy there are four different parking zones in Princes Street.”

The consultation runs until January 8.
