Thurso RNLI and local Coastguard teams responded to an emergency call, yesterday (March 15).

The relief lifeboat, Beth Sell, was launched just after 3pm to help a 26ft leisure boat that was in difficulty in Dunnet Bay.

The boat with three crew members on board reported that the steering gear had failed and they were drifting towards the beach.

The lifeboat arrived on scene at 3.22pm and spoke to the boat’s crew who were well equipped with the appropriate safety gear and reported no injuries.

A temporary tow rope was attached to pull the boat away from the beach. Once in deeper water a permanent tow was established.

A spokesperson for Thurso RNLI said: “The boat was towed back to Scrabster and just outside the entrance to the harbour, coxswain Andy Pearson and crew secured the boat to the side of the lifeboat to allow the boat to be easier manoeuvred to a nearby harbour pontoon.

“Once the leisure boat was safely secured the lifeboat was then refuelled and made ready for service at 5.05pm.”
