The Thurso lifeboat team have issued a reminder to people not to hesitate in calling for help if they see someone having difficulty at sea.

The request comes following yesterday's launch of The Taylors at 11.35am in response to the report of a single paddleboarder in difficulty in the Kyle of Tongue area.

Melness and Durness Coastguard teams were also in attendance and reported that the paddle boarder was safe and well so the lifeboat crew were told to stand down as they were passing Strathy.

The lifeboat returned to Scrabster at 1pm and was completely cleaned as per Covid-19 requirements and made ready for service.

Giving a reminder to people about the importance of reporting incidents, Thurso RNLI lifeboat press officer Ron Gunn said: "Don't be frightened to report – if you see someone who you think is in difficulty at sea please don't hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."

He added: "With the weather improving and the possibility of lockdown restrictions easing more people might want to go to the sea. It is a good time to remind folk to let someone know what their plans are and if possible they should take a mobile phone or something like that with them just in case they get in to difficulties – especially if going out by themselves."
