Thurso junction railings ‘won’t be replaced’

Efforts to get railings reinstated at a busy Thurso junction have come to naught.

Local Highland Councillor Matthew Reiss had been seeking to have the metal barrier outside the Toll Gallery at the intersection of the A9 and the A836 following recent roadworks.

But trunk road contractor BEAR Scotland has made clear that is not on its agenda.

“I got a letter from BEAR saying they will not be putting the railings back,” Councillor Reiss said at Tuesday evening’s meeting of Thurso Community Council.

The councillor, a former senior police officer, wanted the railings re-erected on grounds of pedestrian safety.

BEAR claims people had been regularly putting banners on the railings and that they would interfere with sight-lines for motorists turning left. In addition, the contractor believed they would also have posed a potential risk to cyclists.
