A sheriff heard how a sixteen-year-old relationship deteriorated and ended up in court for Graham Young.

The 44-year-old subjected his partner, Carly Sutherland, to threatening or abusive behaviour during a year-long period during which he argued with her and shouted and swore at her on various occasions at their then home in Ravenshill Road, Thurso.

Young, now of Brownhill Road, Thurso, admitted a reduced charge at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday and will be sentenced on June 16 after Sheriff Andrew Berry considers a background report.

Fiscal David Barclay said that during the period between January 1 and December 27, last year, it was clear that there was "something building up" in terms of the couple's interaction and the way Ms Sutherland was being spoken to by her partner.

He said: "That became more frequent, over and above the robust conversations that couples might have. As time went by, the matter was reported to the police.

"Officers made inquiries and found witnesses who spoke to the fact that they had seen and heard the accused acting in a particular manner towards his partner."

Mr Barclay said that at the time the matter came to the attention of the police, Ms Sutherland was of the view that the relationship could not continue, although she had reservations about a possible non-harassment order being introduced.

The police are to ascertain her up-to-date position on such an order, prior to Young's return to court next month.
