Thurso High School pupils nominated for major film award
Thurso High School pupils have had their Gaelic short film shortlisted in this year’s Scottish Youth Film Festival (SYFF).
Nominated for the 13-18 Documentary category was Ar Sealladh aig Àrd-sgoil Inbhir Theòrsa (Our POV of Gaelic) by Thurso High School, winner of the Inspiration Award at FilmG in February.
As Thurso marks 10 years of Gaelic-medium education, the film highlights the progress made and the future of the language.
Three of the four shortlisted films in the same category are FilmG winners, including the winner of the FilmG People’s Choice Award, Aillse Sealladh Marsaili by Sgoil Lìonacleit. The film shares Marsaili’s experience of battling cancer as a teenager in the Western Isles.
Rounding off the Gaelic inclusion in the category is Na Caimbeulaich (The Campbells) by Dunoon Grammar School. A mockumentary inspired by the Kardashians, the film was awarded Best Production Design at FilmG for its impressive camera work and editing.
Iomlaineachd (Perfection) by Parker Dawes, which earlier this year won Best Film in the -18 FilmG competition, is shortlisted in the 13-18 Live Action category.
The film explores the idea of perfection and whether flaws can make things more enjoyable. At just 17, Parker has already won multiple FilmG awards and was recognised as a ‘Rising Star’ by The National Lottery at last year’s London Film Festival.
In the 13-18 Animation Category An Glaoine Nan Draoidh (The Druid’s Stone) by Sophie Smith from the Highlands has been selected for consideration. Sophie was one of the nominees from this year’s FilmG Rionnag Award.
These films will be screened at the 10th iteration of the SYFF, to be held at Armadale Academy, West Lothian, on October 4-5. You can find out more at syff.scot/festival/
