Thurso driver four times drink limit was on her way to work in care home

A Thurso driver who crashed on her way to work while almost four times over the drink-driving limit was described by a sheriff as “a danger to herself and others”.

Karen Scoular left the A836, went through a metal rail and came to rest across the verge, but emerged unhurt from the accident near Mount Pleasant Road, Thurso, on May 12.

Fiscal depute Grant McLennan said that Scoular (56) contacted the emergency services. Police officers who spoke to at her home, nearby, concluded she didn’t require medical attention but detected a smell of alcohol. Scoular’s speech was slurred and she failed a breath test.

A subsequent test revealed a blood-alcohol level of 199 mg – the legal limit is 50 mg.

Scoular, of Morven Place, Thurso, pleaded guilty and was banned from driving for two years. She was also fined £330.

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that Scoular had taken a decision to drive to her work in a care home and regretted it.

Sheriff Neil Wilson told the accused, a first offender: “As you well know, this is a serious matter. You were very close to four times over the limit and a danger to yourself and others.”

A plea of not guilty to a second charge of dangerous driving was accepted by the fiscal depute.
