Thurso Community Development Trust has all the ingredients in place for its first Seniors Lunch Club, scheduled for Tuesday, June 28.

The trust is known for delivering meals each month across the town and the surrounding areas, and now it will begin holding a monthly lunch club for seniors on the same day.

Taking place on the last Tuesday of the month, it will not be seeking to replace the delivery service – the idea is to offer the option for a lunch for older people alongside their peers.

Bookings to attend can be made by phone on 01847 867310 or by email at info@thursocdt.co.uk

Food coordinator Sara-Jane Hardy said: “After two years of restrictions, social isolation was at an all-time high among the older population in Thurso. While we could help with it a bit, thanks to our deliveries, we felt there was a real chance to try and cut through that isolation with our Seniors Lunch Club.”

The venue is the rugby club in Millbank Road, from noon until around 2.30pm on the 28th, with food cooked in the Thurso Youth Club kitchen.

The first event will feature Robin Young of Caithness FM playing the boxie alongside a group of Highland dancers.

The event, like the delivery service, will be free of charge to those who attend, although if anyone feels able to make a donation the trust will gratefully accept.

Trust chairperson Helen Allan said: “We’ve loved being able to offer our monthly lunch deliveries, but with additional capacity we saw a real chance to make it an even bigger event. We hope the folk we’ve been cooking for each month will be interested in coming along.”

The initiative, run through the Thurso Eats project, has been funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.
