Strong winds earlier in the week blew down the Christmas tree in the town's Sir John's Square just one day after it was put up.

Volunteers put in a great deal of work to get the huge tree put up on Tuesday, which involved a crane from local contractors, Hugh Simpson.

However, high winds the following night proved to much for the impressive specimen which was just too heavy and bushy, so it toppled over ripping the anchors out from the ground. Fortunately no real damage was caused and no one was injured.

In an update on the Thurso Christmas Lights Facebook page it states that a plan is in place to have the tree put back up. The switching on of the lights had been scheduled for Sunday at 5pm.

Volunteer Mark Rosie explained that the tree was moved again by crane yesterday (Thursday) so repairs to the ground could go ahead hopefully tomorrow with the tree back up by the start of the week.
