THURSO Community Council could help provide funding for local organisations. That was agreed this week by members after chairman Ron Gunn mooted the idea.

He said the community council over the years had accumulated £10,000 in its bank account – a sum not required for the administration and running of the body. Mr Gunn suggested making use of the money by providing financial help to local groups.

He raised the issue with Highland Council's Caithness ward manager Alex Mcmanus and was told there would be no difficulty in using the money in that way so long as it was spent for the benefit of the local community and was accountable.

Joan Lawrie of Thurso Community Development Trust suggested having a generic application form so all the groups are answering the same questions, while Ian Wright said any organisations that would benefit from the money would have to be within the community council boundary area.

Treasurer Elspeth Husband wondered how often the payments might be made. Mr Gunn said a group should get the money when it needed it rather than having to wait until an application was determined on an arranged date.

Community councillors backed the plan at their meeting in Mount Pleasant Primary School on Tuesday night.

Mr Gunn also raised the possibility of having associate members on the community council, as was the case in the past. They would represent other organisations in the town as well as young people aged between 16 and 19.

Previously, representatives from bodies such as Thurso High School, the Royal British Legion and Pentland Housing Association were associate members.

"We would welcome other groups to come along," Mr Gunn said.
