TEN new cases of Covid-19 have been identified across the NHS Highland area in the past 24 hours.

The region's cumulative total increased to 1036 when the latest daily update was published.

The slight rise came as it was confirmed that the Highland Council area will be dropping into tier one of the Scottish Government's new coronavirus restriction measures from November 2. This will enable hospitality businesses to all but fully reopen, with closing time curfews only coming into effect at 10.30pm.

Meanwhile, there were 1128 new positive tests for coronavirus across Scotland in the past 24 hours.

Recent rises in hospital admissions continued, with the number of people receiving treatment for Covid-19 increasing to 1152 from 1117 yesterday.

Of those, some 86 were in intensive care – up one.

And there were 37 further deaths among people who previously tested positive for the virus.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new infections in NHS Shetland, but one fresh case each in NHS Eileanan Siar and NHS Orkney, which saw their total rise to 69 and 33 respectively.

NHS Grampian detected 26 new cases of Covid-19, for a running total of 3294.

And NHS Tayside's overall total rose 52 to 3966.

There have now been 61,531 cumulative confirmed cases across Scotland since the start of the pandemic.
