A “truly exceptional” Oxford University lecturer from Caithness has received an award for the quality of his teaching.

Dr Craig Campbell is one of seven people honoured in the university’s 2024 Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Teaching Awards.

Dr Campbell (40) is the son of Donald and Coreen Campbell, of Wick. He was educated at Wick South Primary School and Wick High before going on to St Andrews University and then Oxford.

He is a departmental lecturer in practical chemistry and organic chemistry, and lecturer in organic chemistry, at the Queen’s College and St Hugh’s College.

The teaching awards scheme is “dedicated to celebrating success and recognising innovative teaching practices across all career stages”.

Dr Campbell was nominated by two members of staff. He is described as “a truly exceptional teacher who cannot do enough for his students”.

His involvement in the development of a new practical chemistry course was highlighted in particular. Dr Campbell is also described as someone who “has helped establish Oxford as an institution that leads the way on modern teaching approaches for practical chemistry”.
