North MP Jamie Stone has sent out a message of support for today's International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
Today marks 31 years since the World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. However, statistics show that 71 countries still criminalise same-sex activity with 11 imposing the death penalty and 15 refuse to allow transgender people to express their identity.
Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland, and Easter Ross, Jamie Stone, has given his support to the cause, saying that “more must be done” to support minorities across the UK and beyond.
Mr Stone commented: “So many people around the world are forced to hide who they are from fear of persecution. Meanwhile, people are also made to wait years for gender identity support on the NHS.
“I have seen this first-hand with friends and colleagues, and I find it unacceptable that we live in a world where this is still the case. Recognition is a small step, and yet there is still much work to be done to achieve this for the LGBT+ community.
“Liberals will always protect and champion the right to be who you are, love who you love and live in a society free from discrimination and persecution."
