Local MP Jamie Stone has warned that there is "still much more to do" in the fight against HIV and Aids.
He was speaking as he wore a red ribbon to show his support for World Aids Day, marking 40 years since the start of the Aids epidemic in the UK.
Nowadays, countless lives are saved thanks to the introduction of the HIV prevention drug PrEP which is available on the NHS.
Mr Stone, the Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: “While the government has progressed in its fight against HIV and Aids, there is still much more to do. Thousands of individuals are still missing out on the PrEP pill as GPs, pharmacies and maternity services are still facing obstacles to prescribe it.
“It is imperative that online testing becomes available year-around and that we provide support to those who are unable to gain easy access to HIV testing. We must also do our best to support those in our communities who have tested positive. It is crucial that we provide people with successful HIV treatment and services so that they can live long and healthy lives.
"The government cannot stand by idly and must continue to tackle the Aids epidemic without pause. Our efforts should never stop.”
