Stars line up for new season at accordion and fiddle club

Thurso Accordion and Fiddle Club will be hoping to hit the right note when its new season gets under way next week.

The club has lined up a star-studded list of local and Scottish talent to perform over the coming months, including Gordon Pattullo who is one of the top accordionists in the country. He has recorded over 20 albums and has featured on radio and TV. Pattullo will be playing at the Pentland Hotel in Thurso – the club's regular venue – on April 6 next year.

But it will be a Caithness band, the Daniel McPhee Trio, who will get proceedings started when the season begins on Monday night.

The John Stuart Band will be top of the bill at the October event, with Ian Joseph MacDonald and the Caithness Scorries appearing in November and December respectively.

To start 2020, Addie Harper will be appearing at the Pentland while the following month there will be a performance from another well-known local musician, Brandon McPhee.

In March, the Jim Mackay Trio will be the guests while Gordon Pattullo will be the star attraction in April with the Callaghan Ceilidh Band closing the season on May 4.

The club was set up in 1981 and has been a mainstay of the local music scene ever since, nurturing local talent such as Karen Steven, Addie Harper, Gordon Gunn, Alastair MacDonald and Brandon McPhee over the years.

Club spokesman Ian Wright said: "We want to bring on and encourage young talent and are not there to criticise. If they can come along and give us a turn that is what we are after."
