Spittal members reign supreme at West of Caithness SWI Bulb Show

THERE was a spectacular display of spring flowers at the 2019 West of Caithness SWI Bulb Show held in the Royal British Legion, Thurso.

The judges, Sheila Macleod, Virginia Miller and Elizabeth and James MacDonald, had a difficult job with an increase in entries.

The show was opened by Ron Gunn of Caithness health Action Team.

Spittal WRI reigned supreme with member Linda Levack winning best exhibit and most points in show,and the institute scooping the most points overall.

Bertha McGill of Scrabster SWI had a very successful day with her first attempt at bulb growing, with runner-up to best exhibit with three hyacinths, and most points in hyacinth classes.

Afternoon tea was served by Banniskirk SWI.

Trophy winners – West of Caithness Bulb Show Cup for best single hyacinth (pink, own choice): 1 Bertha McGill, Scrabster; 2 Isobel Mackenzie, Banniskirk; 3 Linda Levack, Spittal.

The Henderson Cup for best two hyacinths (Delft Blue): 1 Janet Corbett, Murkle; 2 Jean Watt, Spittal; 3. Ruth Manson, Dunnet.

West of Caithness Bulb Show Shield for best pot of three hyacinths (Miss Saigon): 1 Bertha McGill, Scrabster; 2 Linda Levack, Spittal; 3 Joanna Mackay, Murkle.

West of Caithness Bulb Show Cup for best daffodils (Dutch Master): 1 Anne Gunn, Banniskirk; 2 Linda Levack, Spittal; 3 Bertha McGill, Scrabster.

West of Caithness Bulb Show Cup for single narcissus (Semper Avanti): 1 Isobel Mackenzie, Banniskirk; 2 Adela Blake, Dunnet; 3. Linda Levack, Spittal.

West of Caithness Bulb Show Cup for double narcissi (own choice, multi-headed): 1 Liz Hewitson, Spittal; 2 Joanna Mackay, Murkle; 3 Nan Budge, Spittal.

Murkle WRI Trophy for own choice variety tulips: 1 Liz Hewitson, Spittal; 2 Liffy Ross, Dunnet; 3 Ruth Manson, Dunnet.

The Elsie Henderson Memorial Tray for best named tulips (Christmas Dream): 1 Linda Levack, Spittal; 2 Liffy Ross, Dunnet; 3 Adela Blake, Dunnet.

West of Caithness Bulb Show Trophy for best bowl of crocus: Anne Gunn, Banniskirk. Henderson Memorial Salver for runner-up to best bowl of crocus: Lorna Swanson, Bower; 3 Mary Mackay, Bower.

West of Caithness Bulb Show Cup for best single amaryllis: 1 Ruth Manson, Dunnet; 2 Liffy Ross, Dunnet; 3 Lorna Swanson, Bower.

The Anne Gunn Cup for best double amaryllis: 1 Anne Gunn, Banniskirk; 2 Isobel Paul, Banniskirk; 3.Ruth Manson, Dunnet.

Dunnet Institute Trophy for best miniature bulb class: 1 Anne Gunn, Banniskirk; 2 Mary Mackay, Bower; 3 Lorna Swanson, Bower.

Joanna Mackay Quaich for best floral art entry: 1 Lorna Swanson, Bower 2 Joanna Mackay, Murkle; 3 Liz Hewitson, Spittal.

Linda Bell Trophy presented by Murkle WRI for most points in the hyacinth classes: Bertha McGill, Scrabster.

Amy Walker Trophy for best in junior section (10 Jetfire): Erin Hewitson, Spittal.

West of Caithness Bulb Show Cup for best exhibit: Linda Levack (single tulips).

The Manson Cup for runner-up to best exhibit: Bertha McGill (three hyacinths).

The Promise of Spring Trophy donated by Lorna Swanson for member with most points: Linda Levack (43 points).

The Liffy Ross Cup for member with second highest points: Joanna Mackay (36 points).

The Western Federation Trophy for institute under 20 members with most points: Spittal (95 points).

The Lady Alexander Sinclair Trophy for institute over 20 members with most points: Murkle (51 points).

West of Caithness Bulb Show Millennium Cup for most points overall: Spittal.
