Snappy days! Empty shops in Thurso town centre spruced up with historic pictures

Window-sized photographs of quaint historic scenes have been sited in the front of vacant shops in Thurso town centre as part of a new initiative to brighten up the area.

A Thurso Community Council (TCC) subgroup is working on the project as part of the Thurso Town Centre Initiative 2024 (TTCI). The TCC is also involved in brightening the planters on the esplanade, repainting the town’s benches and weeding.

Louise Smith from the TTCI said that the public may have thought “angels, fairies or pixies” were out in the town centre and sprucing it up over the weekend. “[We] saw major progress this weekend with the installation of window-sized photographs in some shop windows with more planned,” she said.

“So far, Thurso town centre projects have received funding from Caithness Community Fund and ScottishPower Renewables’ Halsary Windfarm (£2385), Action Earth (£250) and from the Highland Council Ward Discretionary Budget (£400).”

Work includes street weeding, planters at the esplanade and the historic pictures form the biggest project so far. Thurso Community Councillor, Corinne Nicklin, who has led many of the sub-projects said: “We are encouraging the community to have renewed pride in our town.”

The subgroup also recently took on leading the production of the Thurso Local Place Plan as it noted that these are typically led by the community council in an area.

The Stage 1 consultation is planned before Christmas this year. Louise adds: “We are likely to be seeking funding to support the ongoing delivery of this key piece of work. We are keen to have potential partners/stakeholders contact TCC at this stage.”
