A MAN released from Caithness General Hospital on Wednesday found himself back in for treatment moments after leaving the building and falling down a steep embankment outside.

A source said the man had been discharged and had taken a shortcut down the embankment rather than follow the road around.

The misjudged shortcut led to him unfortunately suffering a leg injury when he fell down the embankment and over a five-foot wall at the bottom, close by the town's war memorial.

Traffic was stopped for around 15 minutes as the man was attended to by police and medical staff and then taken on a very short trip back to the hospital by ambulance.

A police spokesperson said officers were made aware of "a man having suffered a leg injury" in the Cliff Road area of Wick during the afternoon of Wednesday, April 17.

"Officers supported staff from the Scottish Ambulance Service and assisted with traffic management before the man was taken to Caithness General Hospital for treatment."

The man's injury is not thought to be serious.
