Scouts commemorate special Founder’s Day

LIKE their counterparts up and down the country, over 120 members of the scouting fraternity in Caithness had a parade and special service to mark the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the worldwide youth movement.

During the service at Wick Old Parish Church, awards were handed out to cubs and beavers while Thurso teenagers Chloe Anderson and Alsitair Sinclair were inducted into the explorer scout section.

The beavers also took part in what must have been one of the first tug-of-war competitions to take place in a church.

The youngsters were invited to take part during the service conducted by retired Church of Scotland deacon John Craw to illustrate the theme of his Founder’s Day sermon which was the competing directions in which youngsters are pulled as they grow up.
