An award-winning training and employment project for people who have a history of drug or alcohol problems is now recruiting people in the Highlands to take part.

The Recovery Worker Training Project (RWTP), run by Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF), supports, trains and prepares people with a history of substance abuse problems to work in the social care field.

The project has been running in local authorities throughout Scotland for nearly 20 years.

And the programme is now being delivered online, offering remote training.

RWTP trainees are supported over nine months to achieve a recognised qualification in Health and Social Care, while working in placements in local services.

As well as developing skills and confidence, the trainees also receive an intensive package of personalised support and a weekly wage.

SDF’s chief executive David Liddell said: “Since the programme’s inception in 2004, we have been keen to provide as many people as possible the ability to benefit from the life-changing opportunities that the project provides.

“Over the years, our experience elsewhere in Scotland has been that 90 per cent complete the course, with 85 per cent of those graduating from the paid employment programme going on to work in either addiction services or the wider social care services.

“The programme therefore not only benefits individuals, but also local services seeking to recruit motivated and skilled workers.”

SDF will continue to work with Highland Alcohol and Drug Partnership on the project.

A drop-in session delivered over Zoom will be available for anybody that has questions about what RWTP would entail.

The session takes place on March 17.
