Weather and staff shortages have sparked the cancellation of several rail services in the north on Thursday.

The 6.11am Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness train was cancelled due to the lingering effects of former Hurricane Ernesto, which brought gales and heavy rains to the west on Wednesday and overnight.

ScotRail successfully secured a 19-seater minibus replacement for this service, but warned that "due to very limited replacement transport being secured, passengers are advised to consider making their own alternative arrangements".

They also advised that the journey would likely take longer than the train.

Elsewhere, the 12.34pm Wick to Inverness service, and the 6.31pm Inverness to Wick, which would have used the same train, are also cancelled - this time due to a “shortage of train crew".

There was no immediate word on Thursday morning whether bus replacement services would be sourced for these.
