WICK Academy midfielder Sam Mackay has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the club.

The 22-year old, who is considered as one of the brightest talents in the Highland League, put pen to paper this week.

Mackay, who has been a first-team regular since joining the club in 2009 was linked with a possible return to Brora Rangers this summer.

However, Mackay, who confirmed he had held talks with the rival club, said that the appointment of David Kirkwood as manager was a big factor in his decision to stay.

Academy chairman Colin Stewart said that a deal had been reached by both parties to the delight of everyone concerned.

"Sam is an integral part of the first team, he said. "We are delighted that he has agreed to stay with the club for the foreseeable future.

A former Scotland schoolboy international, Mackay spent five seasons with Brora at Dudgeon Park before signing with Deveronvale in 2008.

During his time in Banff he was named as the Sunday Post Young Player of the Year in 2009 and also during his first year at Harmsworth Park.
