Martin and Claire Murray picked up a prestigious CoolBrands award for Rock Rose Gin at a special event in London.

A Caithness gin has been honoured with influential CoolBrands status in an evening of celebration attended by leaders from the UK world of branding and advertising.

Husband and wife team Martin and Claire Murray, who founded the Dunnet Bay Distillery in 2014, received their award in a glittering party held at the new boutique Londoners Hotel in the capital’s Leicester Square.

CoolBrands® launched in 2001 pays tribute to the nation’s latest trend setting brands. Those chosen are judged on originality, innovation, authenticity, desirability and responsibility.

Delighted to pick up the award, Martin Murray said: "When you see the brands that were alongside us, the likes of Jaguar, for a wee business in Caithness it is just great to boost our profile to people not just in this country but also overseas."

Making it all the more special he explained was the fact that companies do not actually enter the awards, instead the judges take into consider information found online about products, including reviews. "For us to get a CoolBrands award without applying for it really feels very good," he said.

The couple, who were making their first trip down to London in two years, found the whole experience beneficial, meeting other brands and forming new contacts.

Based at Dunnet, the multi-award winning local distillers are known for being eco-friendly – the first company in the sector to offer spirits in recyclable pouches to refill their iconic ceramic bottles.

The family run business hand-crafts a range of Rock Rose Gins, and Holy Grass Vodka, which celebrate the heritage and provenance of Caithness by using many locally foraged and home-grown botanicals.

They have also just received double recognition in this year's Highland Business Awards – the innovation and environmental sustainability awards.

The CoolBrands roster is announced annually along with Superbrands, which honours the most trusted brands across many sectors and industries that have achieved the highest level of quality, reliability and distinction.

The awards are independently made following an analysis by a leading data research company that tracks the perception of a wide range of business and consumer brands across as many as 80 different categories.

An average of 1500 brands are scrutinised for the Coolbrands list and 3200 for Superbrands. They are then voted on by a nationally representative sample of 2500 consumers and 2500 British business professionals with purchasing or managerial responsibility before the results are ratified and scored by leading industry experts.

The company's story can be seen on the Coolbrands website.
