Thurso provost Struan Mackie is relieved that Thurso’s three primary schools are all part of Highland Council’s recently unveiled £100 million masterplan for the town.

Part of the blueprint includes replacing the down-at-heel Thurso High School along with the town’s Miller Academy, Pennyland and Mount Pleasant schools.

Speaking at Tuesday evening’s meeting of Thurso Community Council, Highland councillor Struan Mackie said: “It’s good news that they are looking to upgrade the whole school estate in Thurso.

“We're equal with Dingwall in terms of the council’s priorities in the masterplan.”

Councillor Mackie admitted: “My worry was that they might look to amalgamate the three primaries, like has happened in other areas.

“It would have been devastating to see the heart of the community ripped out in that way.”

Meanwhile, the unkempt state of streets in Thurso's town centre at weekends has been condemned by the town's community representatives.

They have taken Highland Council to task for their cleaning staff allegedly being missing in action on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

“I was down the street a week last Sunday and the amount of glass, cigarette ends and muck on the street was unbelievable,” Thurso Community Council chair Thelma Mackenzie said at Tuesday’s meeting.

“It was just shocking. Some of the drains were also choked.”

She said a visit to Edinburgh’s Princes Street on Sunday morning proved a contrast when she said one could “eat your breakfast off the street”.

She won support from community council colleague Ian Carlisle, the co-owner of the town’s Messy Nessy cafe and play centre.

He said he regularly has to clear up broken glass and vomit outside his premises in the pedestrian precinct.

Highland Council has been contacted for comment.
