Local farmer Graham Sutherland has had a record yield of silage bales from a three-and-a-half acre field at Hillhead, Lybster.

Graham, of Occumster, completed the third cut of the season last Friday (September 18) and baled on the Sunday as the mist rolled in from the sea.

The first cut on May 25 yielded 21 bales, then a small quantity of two hundredweight per acre was applied in June and on July10 a further 17 bales were made, with last weekend's third cut rolling up a further 25 bales.

Local Agricultural commentator Willie Mackay said: "This year has seen a terrific amount of grass growth across the whole of Caithness, conditions have been ideal.

"There is grass everywhere and most farmers are happy with two cuts of silage any year but for a third cut seen at Hillhead is a real bonus for Mr Sutherland."
