PLANS to integrate health, education and social care services in the Highlands have been approved.

The Highland Council and NHS Highland agreed to proceed with proposals to produce a new model for care and support services for adults and children at a meeting in Inverness last Thursday.

NHS Highland will act as the lead agency for adult care services which will see 1400 staff transfer from the Highland Council.

An estimated 230 staff in child health services will transfer from NHS Highland to the council which will now oversee child and family services.

Councillor Michael Foxley, leader of the Highland Council, said both organisations are leading the way in making it easier for the public to access vital services. "We need to initiate the locality partnerships for front-line staff representatives, councillors and NHS board members as soon as possible."

The target date for implementation of the new model is next April.
