FOOD FOR THOUGHT: By Howard Stone, Minister of Castletown & Community Free Church
As Christine and I walked up the drive today, Christine noticed that the snowdrops were just poking their heads through the grass.
It prompted a question that I’ve often considered: “How do bulbs know that it’s time to emerge from the darkness of the earth, after months of slumber?”
Perhaps it’s triggered by the lengthening days or by changes in average temperature. There will be a biological explanation for the phenomenon, I’m sure.
One of the songs of the Bible credits God with making the grass grow, so the same must be true for snowdrops. He makes the bulbs sprout.
Not that it happens by some magical, divine power. He has created the mechanism that results in the flowers of spring bursting into life at just the right time, every year. So it is God – who calls himself, “I am,” the source of all existence and life – who deserves the acclaim for the amazing world that surrounds us. It didn’t materialise by chance.
It’s natural for us, when we’ve made a lovely meal, finished decorating a room or completed a DIY job, to expect others to express their appreciation of what we’ve achieved. How much more should we be grateful to God for what he has made.
Indeed, the Bible is plain that we are guilty of sin if we don’t thank him and glorify him as Creator. He has given us such a wonderful world to live in, how grateful and appreciative we should be!
Do you thank God for the marvellous world he has created for you?
