WORK is to be carried out at Wick’s riverside car park next month following widespread concern about potholes and condition of the surface.
William Gilfillan, Highland Council’s director of community services, made the commitment in an email to John Bogle, the secretary of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council in recognition of the state of the car park.
He said it would be “brought back to a safe operational standard”.
Mr Bogle said: “We are delighted that we are to see some action at last to at least make the car park safe.”
In his email, Mr Gilfillan acknowledged the facility requires “significant remedial work”.
He explained the council plans to carry out a community engagement exercise later this year to consider income generation opportunities locally and how the money could be reinvested.
“This could include income from a range of sources including for example, community benefit, tourism-related, car parking and other sources perhaps only known locally – income which could then be used to carry out major works on the car park.
“However, in recognition of the state of the car park as it stands, at the start of the new financial year [April], the council will carry out repairs... to ensure it is brought back to a safe operational standard,” he said.
Responding to the email, Mr Bogle said: “We will engage with Highland Council later in the year regarding income generation and we look forward to the ‘major works’ on the car park.”
Last month, Mr Bogle described the potholes at the car park as being “like craters on the moon” and the worst he had seen anywhere in the Highlands.
