THE tale of a disaster which rocked a Sutherland fishing community is to be broadcast to the world.

The Portskerra Fishing Disaster will be one of the performances which will be shown as part of Five Minute Theatre.

An initiative organised by National Theatre of Scotland, the event will see five-minute performances broadcast on the internet over a period of 24 hours on Tuesday, June 21, from 5pm.

Storyteller Alexandria Patience who created the script along with Donald McNeill and Toby Watts will perform from her cottage in the village.

In 1918, elderly men were forced to go out to catch fish as the majority of younger people from the area were fighting during the First World War.

An atrocious storm saw seven fishermen lose their lives with one boat returning with nobody on board.

Audiences are invited to watch the performance at Ms Patience’s cottage, where it is believed one of the fisherman who lost his life in the disaster lived.

One of the boats which survived the Portskerra disaster was the Julia WK 205 which was built in Wick .

The boat was sold to a gentleman in Scrabster who later sold it to a buyer in Wick.

Ms Patience is very interested to find out if the boat is still in existence as she is keen to trace its history since the disaster.

Ms Patience will be telling the story of the disastereight times on the day.

It is also hoped to release the performance on DVD.

Limited seated is available for the performances on Tuesday, June 21.

To book a ticket or to provide information on the Julia, telephone 01647 531555.
