PICTURES: Tyres, fly-tipped household rubbish and a stag’s skull found during Watten litter pick

The Watten Helps Out (WHO) community group lived up to its name and helped move lots of discarded rubbish from in and around Watten last Sunday (April 13).

Willie Coghill, chair of the group, said that the community spirit was strong as at least 20 volunteers turned up for the spring clean litter pick event.

“We went up Station Road as far as the loch and then up by Greystones Farm,” said Willie.

“Then we went up Bain Place and up the west Watten road. We did the entire village and collected over 30 bags in total.”

Willie said he was unhappy to see evidence of fly-tipping. “It was household rubbish that had been dumped. Bags had been flung in a ditch up Banks Road. We also found tyres at the side of the road.

“There were loads of energy drink tins, sandwich wrappers and lots of vapes. It’s terrible that people do things like that.”

On a brighter note, Willie said he was delighted to see that a fair number of local children came out to help on the day. “It was a very successful day, and we spent over two hours working away. I have to say, though, it’s really hellish what some people throw away.”

Further out Banks Road, some of the volunteers even came across what appears to be the butchered remains of a deer carcass, which may have resulted from poaching.

The WHO Facebook page added: “The village itself isn’t too bad for litter, however, the ditches just outside seem to be a dumping ground for some.

“We found a kids’ scooter, a spanker, tyres, a flask, stag’s head, a bike, a Christmas tree and lots of bags of household rubbish.”
