Residents of a Wick care home have been finding out what it’s like to be part of the fire and rescue service.

A group from Seaview House paid a visit to Thurso fire station where they were able to try out some firefighting gear and even use a hose.

The residents and staff were greeted by dual contract watch commanders Andrew Mackay and Kara Simpson. They provide support to stations in many parts of Caithness and Sutherland.

Seaview House activities coordinator Caz McLauchlan said: “Andrew and Kara took us on a journey through the history of Thurso fire station and their own personal experiences in the fire and rescue service. They demonstrated a clear passion for their work and a deep commitment to serving communities.

“We learned about the specialist equipment used by the fire crews and the detailed process of responding to emergency calls.

“The residents had many questions, and Andrew and Kara were more than happy to answer each one.

“The highlight of the visit was when we were taken through to the fire engines – two pristine, shiny vehicles that stood ready for action. We were thrilled to try on the firefighting gear and even had the chance to operate a hose.

“Everyone left with a new-found appreciation for the work the fire service does.”

Caz has organised another visit as other residents are also keen to visit.
