Residents at Seaview House Care Home in Wick were warmly greeted with a complimentary gin and tonic ahead of an enjoyable afternoon at Dunnet Bay Distillers this past weekend.
It was an educational day out as much as a “sensory exploration” of the distillation process, with experts from the distillery taking their time to explain the infusion process.
From juniper berries to herbs, spices, holly grass and citrus – it was explained that infusion of flavours plays a crucial role in shaping the final product.
Established in 2014 by the dynamic husband-and-wife duo of Martin and Claire Murray, the distillery has earned plaudits for its gin and vodka varieties, including the award-winning Rock Rose Gin.
The history of the distillery was brought to life by Johanne, a knowledgeable guide who expertly shared the story of how the distillery came to be, from humble beginnings to becoming one of Scotland’s most celebrated producers, with Martin and Claire’s vision realized in full.
A spokesperson for the care home said: “The tasting session was a particular highlight of the afternoon, as residents had the opportunity to sample different varieties of gin and vodka, each with its own unique flavour profile.
“For Tom, it was the coffee flavoured that got the thumbs up, however judging by Rita’s face its maybe not for her.
“Thank you so very much to the Rock Rose team for having us for the afternoon. It was brilliant and we cannot wait for their new whisky distillery at Stanergill, Castletown to open next summer.”
